The stunning pictures were captured by crew members onboard the space shuttle Endeavour in 1994.


Nasa said the eruption, which began on September 30, was covered almost immediately by the astronauts on Endeavour.

The eruption cloud reach 60,000ft above sea level, with winds carrying the ash 640 miles south-east of the volcano.
